This website has two main strands.

For those of classical music orientation the HOWARD SNELL MUSIC CATALOGUE is the link to follow.

For those whose interests lie in the world of Brass Bands the RAKEWAY MUSIC CATALOGUE is the direction to take.

NOTES about NOTES is the place for material on music performance where I will develop new subject matter on playing (having been a player), conducting (ditto), writing and arranging (ditto) as well as any else that might be of interest.

By the way...

COMPLETE NOW in NOTES about NOTES is an introductory article about CONDUCTING.

NEWS and VIEWS is just that, as well as introducing new publications from time to time.

DOWNLOADS of something unusual or new will appear occasionally as pdfs.

DAVID CHILDS latest CD is entitled, I am delighted to say, MOTO PERPETUO. My Fantasy on Paganini's unique Moto Perpetuo has been recently recorded by David. It starts with Paganini's own music... but then gradually goes further and further out on its own limb. The CD also includes my composition ORATION.

Published by World of Brass, the CD will be released on September 4th 2010 at the British Open Contest in Birmingham's Symphony Hall.

This version of Paganini's Moto Perpetuo was made originally for the debut recording of the Childs Brothers, David's father Bob and his Uncle Nick. As a showpiece this musical display of perpetual motion still takes some beating, and is used regularly by virtuoso performers on many different instruments.

HOWARD SNELL MUSIC is obvious, but why, what, is RAKEWAY?

At the time I started to publish music, my wife Angela and I, plus four children who are now thoroughly middle-aged, lived in rural Staffordshire, as middle England as it is possible to get.

Our house was at the junction of a Roman road... part of it was in fact built over the road... and an ancient british, pre-celtic road. The road is in use to this day, only slightly updated. In old English it was called the Rake-Way. It seemed a suitable choice especially with its history and its character of always trying to follow the highest ground.

We lived there for many years before moving on to something completely different...
